Surface at the Robert Matsui Gallery: Sacramento Town Hall
This is a the setup of the Surface show at the Robert Matsui Gallery in the new Sacramento Town Hall. As the title suggests there are any different surfaces or textures within the pieces.
These sculptures in the box are made of stoneware by Maggie Jiminez. The left is Da Judge and the right is Aphid. The wings of Da Judge is translucent and the body appears to be matte gray green with metallic gold. Overall the Aphid has many rough textures with the indentations being glossy and the rest being matte black.
Fissure by Jaya King encaustic on panel, 2017. It appears to be like marbled texture with gold in the crack and appears to be matte.
This is a close up of Merle Axelrad's Branch which is a fabric collage from 2011. The lighting and glare from the windows made it impossible to capture a good picture of the whole piece. I later learned from the security that she has a piece on each floor near the elevator which all were fabric collage. On the first floor is the roots of the tree, bottom of the trunk. On the top floor is the canopy of the tree and the floors in between is the body of the tree.
The Atmosphere is Trying to Combine with the Materials of the Earth by William Ishmael. The materials used were mild steel with applied acids from 2015. It had a somewhat reflective surface and appears to look like marbled Jasper. The use of metal as material to appear like stone is very interesting.
The piece I'm in front of is Aberrations 13 by Meech Miyagi made with copper wire from 2016. It looks like netted lace from a distance that's coming apart. Certain parts that overlap give the piece depth, there's a lot of movement within the piece where the wire extends from a central point.
