Flow at Diego Rivera Gallery SFAI
Flow at the Diego Rivera Gallery at San Francisco Art Institute included art pieces that were sculptures and videos that are very interactive. The pieces are set up all around the room, they look very inviting and playful at first glance. The map provided at the front does not match the names of artist or pieces throughout the room, so I have no idea who made what.
This piece involves a children's game where hippos eat colorful balls when you push down on the black lever. The colorful balls are replaced by painkillers. Though the pieces all seem very playful and inviting, they're very dark and depressing.
Behind me are Religious candles set up on an alter with Barbie pictures in place of Jesus. Idolizing ideal beauty over religion. There's also a small play house on a pedestal I'm looking into.
I was drawn to the dollhouse because I saw a cute little kitty on the porch that seemed to be made of felt. Through the window appears to be a man hanging himself. Though the house seemed to be picture perfect, it was a nightmare inside.
From the other side, there's a lot of chaos happening. The top left seems to be some Satanic ritual or witchcraft ceremony. To the right there is a girl tied up. Bottom left, there's a man hanging himself and next room over, there's a murder happening.
Although first glance, everything in this show looked playful and inviting. It ended up leaving me with a lot of shock, with funny moments and feeling emotional. These artists were very shocking with there way of getting their point across and they did very clearly. By bringing light to issues like suicide, murder, trouble in a home. Issues with society pressuring women and media idolizing ideal beauties. Pharmacies pushing drugs to solve issues in individuals and making a lot of money through it.
